About Mayfield Community Training Centre
Mayfield CTC is a community training centre situated in an urban area in the northside of Cork city. We deliver EQF Level 4 Awards as well as City & Guilds qualifications. Our learners are aged 16-21, primarily early school leavers or young people experiencing unemployment. Some learners arrive with only a primary level qualification. The centre is in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area. Most learners are living in the are although many learners commute to the centre. Learners face issues related to housing, addiction and living in the care system. Some learners have learning difficulties, ADHD, Dyslexia and many struggle with poor mental health. Learners receive a weekly training allowance to attend the centre.
Learners choose to complete one of six courses we offer: Hospitality, Woodwork, Construction, Culinary Skills, Sports and Recreation or Office Skills. The centre operates on continuous intake basis and learners follow individual learning plans which allows them to work at their own pace, typically 6-24 months. Assessments are done primarily through project work with minimal exams, which supports learners who experience exam anxiety or poor attendance. The centre operates year round and has a summer programme which allows learners opportunities for additional trips. We also operate a driving programme which supports students logistically and financially to achieve their driving licence. We offer an exceptional extended work experience programme, linking learners with local employers and supporting them into permanent or apprenticeship roles. Learners hoping to further their studies are supported with college and grant applications as well as with the transition into further education.
What we can offer
The centre first opened in Mayfield in 1985 and has since grown in size. We have approximately 65 learners and 14 staff and deliver EQF Level 4 qualifications. Our staff are experienced in areas including construction, office administration, I.T., art, maths, centre management, hospitality are sports and have years of experience working in community and vocational education.
The centre has a humanistic, nonformal, trauma-informed and friendly approach to training. Our unique approach to education which entails a continuos intake basis and individualised learning plans, combined with our small course sizes (12:1 learner ratio) means our instructors must plan varied lessons to ensure the success of our learners.
2026: Looking for Host for Job Shadow in Sicily
We would like to visit a centre which has strong learner integration with learners from different cultural backgrounds. We believe that a job shadowing opportunity would allow staff to observe others teaching practices and engage in reflective discussions related to the challenges faced by us as teachers and practitioners and also would allow for discussions around barriers to education faced by our learners and ways in which we can motivate them. Our proposed dates for job shadow are October 19-23 2026, however we can be flexible.
We are looking to send participants for this mobility but we can also host a job shadow or mobility for your organisation or collaborate in other ways.
